Follow Your Dreams: Building the Confidence to Chase What Sets Your Soul on Fire

Melissa Cobarruviaz

Every dream starts as a spark, an idea, a passion, or a whisper in your heart that says, This is who I’m meant to be. It may come in the quiet moments, like when you’re daydreaming about what life could look like, or in a surge of excitement when you see someone else living boldly and think, Why not me? That spark is no accident, it’s your soul reminding you of your purpose.

But chasing that dream? That's where courage comes in. That truth is, it's easy to let fear, doubt or the opinion of others stop us before we even begin. You might worry you’re not talented enough, smart enough, or that you'll fail before you succeed. Sometimes, we bury our dreams because we think they’re “unrealistic” or because we’re afraid of what people will say. And yet, deep down, that little voice inside keeps reminding you: You’re meant for more.

Here’s the good news: you already have what it takes. Confidence isn’t about never being scared, it’s about taking one brave step forward even when fear is still whispering in your ear. Every small action you take towards your dream builds more courage than the last, and before long, you’ll look back and realize how far you’ve come.

Your dream doesn’t need you to be fearless, it tells you to be willing. Willing to start. Willing to grow. Willing to believe in yourself, even if it’s just a little at first. Because once you begin, that belief multiples.

Here are a few ways to nurture that confidence and begin following your dreams with faith and determination:

1. Start Small, Dream Big

Dreams can feel overwhelming if you only look at the “big picture.” Standing at the bottom of the mountain and staring up at the peak can make you want to give up before you even begin. But the secret is this: no one climbs a mountain in one leap, they climb it step by step.

Instead of focusing only on where you want to end up, focus on the next step in front of you. Breaking your vision down into small, manageable pieces makes the path less intimidating and much more achievable.

-Write your dream down in detail. Be specific, what does your dream life look like? Where are you living? How do you feel when you wake up each day? Who is alongside you? The more vividly you describe it, the more your brain begins to believe it’s possible

-Choose one action you can take today. This might be researching a class, creating a vision board, setting aside 10 minutes to practice a skill, or even simply telling someone you trust about your dream. Small actions, repeated consistently, create momentum.

-Celebrate progress at every stage. Did you finish your first draft? Attend your first class? Share your idea out loud for the first time? Those “small” wins are proof you’re moving forward. Take the time to acknowledge them.

Confidence doesn’t grow from giant leaps, it grows when you prove to yourself, over and over again, that progress is possible. The steps may feel small in the moment, but they are paving the path to something extraordinary.

2. Silence the Inner Critic

That voice in your head that whispers, “What if I fail?” or “I’m not good enough,” can be one of the biggest dream-stealers. It shows up when you’re about to try something new, share your idea, or take a risk. But here’s the truth: that voice isn’t reality, it's fear trying to protect you from the unknown. The problem is, if you always listen to it, you'll never step into what’s possible.

Learning to quiet your inner critic is one of the most powerful ways to build confidence.

-Catch negative thoughts and challenge them. When you hear yourself saying, “I can’t,” replace it with, “I’m learning,” or “I’m growing.” Shift your self-talk transforms the way you approach challenges.

-Speak affirmations daily: Words carry power, and the more you repeat them, the more your mind begins to believe them. Try saying out loud:

-“I am worthy of my dreams.”

-“I am capable of achieving amazing things.”

-“I am stronger than my doubts.”

-Surround yourself with encouragers. Spend time with friends, mentors, and communities who remind you of your worth when you forget. Being in an environment where others believe in you makes it easiest to believe in yourself.

Remember: the way you speak to yourself sets the tone for your entire journey. If you feed yourself words or doubt, you’ll hesitate. But if you choose words of courage and belief, you’ll start to step forward with strength.

3. Embrace the Power of Failure

Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of the journey that leads to it. Think of failure as the tuition you pay for growth. Every stumble, mistake, or rejection, teaches you something you couldn't have learned otherwise. Without it, there's no progress, no wisdom, and no resilience.

-Reframe failure as feedback. Instead of asking, “Why did this go wrong?” shift the question to, “What did this teach me?” Each setback carries a lesson, maybe it’s about timing, preparation, or simply a reminder to try a new approach.

-Remember the greats. Every author, entrepreneur, athlete, or creator you admire has failed more times than you know. They weren’t successful because they avoided failure, but because they kept going despite it. Rejection letters, missed shots, and unsuccessful launches didn't define them, their persistence did.

-Keep moving forward. Resilience isn’t about never failing, it’s about getting back up stronger each time. Every time you rise again, you build grit and courage.

Confidence blooms when you stop fearing failure and start welcoming it as a teacher. The truth is, failure is simply proof that you’re trying, stretching, and daring to grow.

4. Visualize Your Success

Your imagination is one of the most powerful tools you have. Before you can live your dream, you have to be able to see it. Visualization helps your mind rehearse success before it happens, building belief and motivation along the way.

-Spend 5 minutes a day imagining your dream life. Close your eyes and picture yourself living it. Where are you? What does your environment look like? What are you doing, and how do you feel? The clearer the image, the more your brain begins to see it as possible.

-Create a vision board. Gather images, words, and symbols that inspire you and represent your goals. Place your board somewhere you’ll see daily (on your wall, desk or even your phone wallpaper) so you’re constantly reminded of where you're headed.

-Balance visualization with gratitude. While it’s powerful to imagine your future, don’t forget to celebrate the present. Gratitude grounds you in today while fueling your excitement for tomorrow.

What you hold in your mind consistently, you begin to move toward with intention. When you see it, you start to believe it. And when you believe it, you naturally take actions that bring it closer.

5. Take Bold Action Anyway

Confidence isn’t something you magically wake up with, it's something you build by doing. Waiting until you “feel ready” often keeps you stuck, because the truth is, no one ever feels 100% prepared before stepping into the unknown. Growth happens when you act in spite of the fear, not when you avoid it.

-Say yes to opportunities that stretch you. Even if your stomach flips with nerves, lean in. The discomfort you feel is a sign you’re stepping outside of your comfort zone, and that’s where growth lives.

-Share your dream with someone supportive. Speaking it out loud makes it real. It also invites encouragement, accountability, and maybe even unexpected opportunities from people who believe in you.

-Commit to daily action, even if it’s small. Write one page, send one email, practice for ten minutes, take one brave step. Small, consistent actions create momentum, and momentum builds unstoppable confidence.

-Reminder: action fuels belief: Each time you show up for your dream, you prove to yourself that you are capable. And the more you prove it, the more you’ll believe it.

Don’t wait for confidence before you act. Take action, and confidence will meet you along the way.

Final Thoughts: Your Dreams Are Worth It

Following your dreams is not selfish, it’s necessary. The world doesn’t just need more people going through the motions; it needs people who are fully alive, lit up, and passionate about what they’re here to do. Your dream is not an accident, it’s a calling. It was placed in your heart for a reason, and no one else can bring it to life in the way you can.

You don’t need to have it all figured out, you just need to be brave enough to begin.

So take the leap. Begin today. Even the smallest action is a declaration that your dreams matter, and that you matter.
